Parallels Hosting Summit 2008 - Video Interview with Serguei Beloussov

Fri, 30 May 2008 18:40:00 -0500

While we were at Parallels' third annual hosting summit, we not only brought you a look at what some of the exhibitors and attendees thought of the event, but we had the opportunity to sit down with Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels.

This year's record attendance (as has been mentioned numerous times) was certainly something that made this summit stand out, but this particular event was also the first one to be held under the new, more "optimized" Parallels brand. We asked Serguei how he thought it turned out and about his vision for service providers and ISVs.

The beginning of a brand new year is the perfect time to reorganize a web hosting business that needs more marketing projects in order to increase traffic and sales. It is actually the perfect time to look back at one’s performance throughout the year and make a decision on specific areas that would require improvement.

Ubuntu Server Upgrade to 8.04 Hardy Heron

Wed, 30 Apr 2008 17:30:23 +1000

First of all I have to confess that I have been very busy over the last months or two and have not really been motivated to write. I have a few other projects happening at the same time — at work, at home, at church and at my other websites, and I apologise for neglecting this blog. Hopefully I will get back to writing here again. I am also hoping to write shorter pieces — maybe just 2 or 3 paragraphs — so I can make more frequent posts.

Now, something I have been doing over the last couple of days is to upgrade my Ubuntu servers to 8.04 Hardy Heron, which was “officially” released last Thursday. Now it has been almost two months since I wrote my last blog post, which was about switching from Gentoo to Ubuntu, and now most servers/VPSs that I am personally responsible for (except those at work) are running Ubuntu. Hardy Heron is a LTS (Long Term Support) release which I am hoping to build most my apps on for the next 2 weeks. Upgrading to it from previous Ubuntu releases is surprisingly trivial.

# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade
# apt-get install update-manager-core
# do-release-upgrade
blah blah blah]

The first two steps are only there to ensure you already have latest updates for the current release. It’s quite possible that “update-manager-core” has already been installed. “do-release-upgrade” does all the bulky work — checking whether a new release is available, checking how many packages need to be updated, download, unpackage and install all packages + resolving potential conflicts, etc. And at the end it just reboots your server. Wait for a minute and two, connect back in and hopefully you will be running 8.04 Hardy Heron. I was lucky that it worked on all my Ubuntu boxes.

Do note that the upgrading script, which was written in Python, does chew up quite a lot of memory. I have one tiny 64MB (+256MB swap) VPS that almost got killed with OOM. So be prepared, but YMMV.

So far as a server I haven’t experienced with too much differences. PostgreSQL 8.3 was in but Firebird 2.1 wasn’t (although it should be included “soon”). Now, back to more code hacking.

The Planet Launches Virtual Racks

Wed, 07 May 2008 00:00:00 EST
May 7, 2008 -- ( <http://www.thewhir.com> WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The Planet said Wednesday that it has launched its new "virtual rack" solution, designed to make the features of its popular private rack solution available to customers running as few as two servers.

Today`s suggestion:

unarpages is a flourishing hosting company that was founded in 2000. With a
respectable track record and a clear view of the future, Lunarpages has been
providing reliable hosting solutions to more than 100,000 satisfied customers.

LunarPages.com is an experienced host that offers an impressive assortment of
hosting solutions that will meet the requirement of most individuals. The Basic
hosting plan represents the most affordable solution for small websites and
personal blogs. Very robust, the 350bg storage, 3500gb data transfer and
unlimited MySQL databases provides an above averaged package all for the
affordable price of only $6.95mo. The Basic Hosting plan also includes one free
domain, 10 add-on domains, unlimited subdomains and unlimited emails which is
very impressive.

The business hosting is the next alternative that is indented to cater for the
growing business hosting market. Well balanced and extremely robust, this plan
offers all the basic requirements needed to host a business site. The package
arrives with 3500gb data transfer, unlimited storage all combined with unlimited
databases, Email and FTP accounts. To make the Business hosting plan even more
irresistible Lunarpages also includes four free domains and $700 worth of
CoffeeCup Design Software free. All the shared hosting plans come standard with
the fantastico control panel which provides over 35 scripts for easy install.

For individuals requiring more bandwidth and storage space the Linux Virtual
Private Server is the perfect solution. Flawlessly measured the virtual server
plan delivers the perfect solution for larger, additionally demanding websites
like ecommerce and business portals. Available for only $39.95mo the virtual
server plan provides 1000gb (1TB) data transfer, 20gb storage and the option to
host unlimited sites. Most professional webmasters will find this an excellent
well balanced solution.

LunarPages also provides an excellent dedicated hosting package that is a breath
of fresh air when compared to similar plans offered by other hosts. The Linux
alternative represents the best price/performance combination and is very
accessible at only $99. Delivering a stable hosting solution the Dedicated I
provides a reasonable option with 512mb ram, 80gb storage, powered by an Intel
Celeron 2.0ghz processor. For a more complete alternative we suggest the
Dedicated III comprised of a Dual Intel Xeon 2.66ghz processor combined with
1024mb ram, 200gb storage all of which is available for only $235/mo.

With a superior customer service the LunarPages.com support crew is extremely
competent and always provided assistance when required. The support forum is a
good place to start since most questions have already been answered which will
save customers a lot of time.

We highly recommend LunarPages to anyone looking for a great web host. Their
servers are extremely reliable and the prices low when compared to the
competition. We regard LunarPages an excellent host that will satisfy most users
regardless of their needs. Our special attention goes to the Basic hosting plan
for its robustness and the Dedicated III plan for its low price. In the end we
consider LunarPages a reliable, affordable and stable host perfect for anyone
looking for a good hosting solution.

A Featured dedicated server directory Article

dedicated server directory Products we recommend

I have been a dreamhost client for 4 years now and I agree with the reviews
under me about their service entering dangerous waters as of late. No doubt that
their plans are some of the best (and very affordable for those who want quality
but are a little stingy in their spending) to be found, along with their '97
dollars for every refferal' program.

I have been reading on their site about numerous server upgrades and outages
too, but they seem to be getting back on their feet (although it seems that
every sever outage has been on a server that I am not hosted on...) and I won't
be suprised if they explode with popularity due to their kind and personal
staff, as well as their upbeat employee-owned company ideals.

I highly reccommend them for a personal site, however if you are a company who
can't afford one second of downtime, I suggest waiting a few months untill they
are done upgrading their servers.

All in all, I'll never leave dreamhost.

Virtuozzo / OpenVZ networking broken for Redhat 7.X VEs

Sun, 01 Oct 2006 14:23:11 -0400

The problem:
A few months ago we noticed that after updating either Virtuozzo or OpenVZ utilities, we would no longer be able to reboot Redhat 7 virtual environments (VEs - or VPS virtual private servers]).

We tracked this down to the fact that Virtuozzo and OpenVZ have the code:

CP='/bin/cp -f --preserve=mode,ownership'

in the files: dists/scripts/redhat-add_ip.sh & dists/scripts/functions

The above scripts are executed in the VEs to setup networking - the problem is that RedHat 7 supports only 'cp --preserve' and not 'cp --preserve=...' and therefore the startup scripts can't run and setup networking in the VEs.

The Solution:
The solution is easy:

Just modify: dists/scripts/redhat-add_ip.sh & dists/scripts/functions (in /etc/vz for OpenVZ or /etc/sysconfig/vz for Virtuozzo) and remove the "=mode, ownership" text. That will fix it.

Important: You must manually make the above changes after any time that Virtuozz or OpenVZ releases a new version of the virtuozzo tools because they will override this.

(update) Bug Report submitted to OpenVZ:
We opened a bug report with OpenVZ and they've responded, however we're unsure if they will fix it - we asked for clarification but we've received no response.

Trust Level Control: Showing Customers Some TLC

Mon, 03 Jan 2005 00:00:00 EST
The hard truth about Service Level Agreements is that many service providers offer them with little or no consideration of whether their provisions can be met. Companies serious about establishing customer trust need to deliver on their promises.

Getting your web server with the Linux operating system is particular important for companies which need to set up eCommerce sites. When customers rely on your site for sending in their orders, you need to make sure that you web site is running twenty four hours a day. Linux web hosting with live support might not be a bad idea for mission critical sites. Some Linux web hosts reviewed at Webhostingfinds.com include:

Configuring Litespeed Webserver

Wed, 13 Jun 2007 14:20:47 -0400
If you are looking for a fast webserver, stop searching and take a look at LiteSpeed Webserver. It is an apache emulator with high performance. It can double the server speed at the same time reduce the server load by half. LiteSpeed has now powered some of the world's popular websites like Wordpress.Com, AirLiners.Net (both having 30+ millions hits per day).

Content Management Systems

Fri, 15 Sep 2006 02:02:29 -0400

Wikipedia defines a Content Management System (CMS) as follows:

A content management system is a computer software system for organizing and facilitating collaborative creation of documents and other content. A content management system is sometimes a web application used for managing websites and web content, though in many cases, content management systems require special client software for editing and constructing articles. They can also be used for storage and single sourcing of documentation for a firm including but not limited to operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, etc. The market for content management systems remains fragmented, with many open-source and proprietary solutions available. The term was originally used for website publishing and management systems. Early content management systems were developed internally at organizations which were doing a lot of content publishing. In 1995, CNET spun out its internal development offerings into a separate company called Vignette, which opened up the market for commercial systems. As the market evolved, the scope of content management systems broadened, and the term is now used to refer to a range of technologies and techniques, including portal systems, wiki systems, and web-based groupware.
